Decisions & Predictions

In this Ted Talk, the speaker discusses how he let algorithms randomly decide most aspects of his life. I think that algorithms cannot truly be random, and in some way they must have been slightly tailored to him because he wrote them. It is interesting how the algorithms were able to make both decisions and predictions about his lifestyle.

Sliced Bread & Snickers

In this commercial, Sliced Bread Inc. is falling apart financially because Little Caesars is overtaking it. This commercial uses a variety of photoshop and video effects in order to create a realistic-looking video for the viewer. For example, the woman riding the ostrich is edited-in because it is unlikely that Little Caesars actually has the budget for this.

Similarly, in this commercial, photoshop and video effects are used to create a realistic-looking crazy commercial. For example, the snickers bar and helicopter are added-in through editing because it is, again, unlikely that Snickers has the budget to rent a helicopter and create a giant Snickers prop.

Deepfakes & Elections

There is growing concern, as shown in this video, that deepfakes may be used to harm an individual’s political campaign. They could show a presidential candidate saying something that they did not actually say, possibly damaging their campaign and platform.

In California, new legislation has been proposed to combat this possibility. This legislation would “prohibit the use of deepfakes to influence political campaigns” and, in addition, protect individuals from becoming victims of deep fake pornography.
